Executive Officer’s Report – April 2015

Our organisation has committed to preventing racism by pledging to undertake activities in support of the campaign.
Your club could also support the campaign by:

  • Signing up to the campaign and promoting posters and resource material within your club/association
  • Flying the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag/s (obtainable from your Federal Member)

GippSport has a new program “Deadly Sport Gippsland” funded by Department of Health and Human Services out of the Koolin Balit strategy. This program aims to improve health and increase physical activity within the Aboriginal communities across Gippsland via social media and social marketing. Please let David Roberts (Program Manager- 0468 431 731) know of any Aboriginal player’s doing well within your club.

Research from 2011 shows that one in seven Australians say they have experienced discrimination because of their colour or background. This figure has been increasing steadily in recent years.

Research has also shown that 70% of people agree that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous people are prejudiced against each other.

The national “Racism. It Stops With Me” campaign, which is being led by the Australian Human Rights Commission, has been developed by a partnership of government and non-government agencies.
