Wellington Hockey Club has been recognised for their inclusive programs after being named a finalist in the Victorian Government’s Community Sport and Recreation Awards. The Club continues to strive for participation for all, and have been named a finalist in the community club of the year category. On Monday 9 November club members will attend the awards night to be held at the MCG.
Wellington Hockey Club have become engaged in a number of programs which assist members of the whole community to participate in the sport of Hockey. A major focus of the club, it’s committee, coaches and volunteers is the emphasis on making their sport welcoming, inclusive and accessible for all. Wellington Hockey Club has engaged in a number of programs supporting inclusion for all, including:
– Australian Drug Foundations Good Sports program
– All Abilities programs
– Hockey 5’s
– Hook into hockey
– Social indoor hockey for kids, adults and All Abilities
– School based programs/clinics
Throughout 2015 the Wellington Hockey Club has facilitated sessions both at their club and at Gippsland Regional Sporting Complex in Sale for people with Disabilities. These All Abilities programs have been provided for students from the Sale Specialist School and adults attending George Gray and Wellington Community Connect Centres which provide disability day programs for adults. Due to the success of these programs, a new social indoor All Abilities program has commenced on Friday afternoons.
As recognition of the work the club is putting in, they were acknowledged as a finalist in the Hockey Victoria ‘Inclusive Club of the year’ award. In 2014 Wellington Hockey Club were also joint winners of 2014 Wellington Shire Council inclusive club of the year award. Recently the Club has also implemented an inclusion sub-committee which includes club members, a representative from GippSport (Regional Sports Assembly) and a Person with Disability. This sub-committee is to ensure that their inclusive programs and initiatives are sustainable into the future. The club also welcomes people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
