The current global Covid-19 pandemic has stalled community sport and created a layer of uncertainty and anxiety amongst everything we do in the community - how we live, work, play etc.  We are still a way off from understanding the true impact of Covid-19 on community sport, however in terms of 'Return to Play'... perhaps there's light at the end of the tunnel.

On Friday the government released its 15 principles for the resumption of sport and recreation.  Following that, over the weekend the AIS has released guidelines for how sport can get back underway following the Coronavirus outbreak.

Interestingly, the Federal Government have stated that the framework is a "general guide" and that decisions on when to implement each phase would be made in consultation with Federal/State & local health authorities.

Alongside this is what we see & read in the media regarding the major professional codes.  The Prime Minister has stated that the return of community and professional sport wouldn't be "completely syncronised".  It's likely that the framework will be applied with discretion at different levels, as such major codes are applying for exemptions - see the NRL for example.

So:

  • Will young people return to traditional community sport after this imposed break?
  • Will volunteers have the drive to re-start community sport in the way that its always been?
  • How will prolonged social distancing restrictions impact the viability of community sport?  No spectators, restrictions on food & beverage service
  • How practical are potential required hygiene measures?  eg: limited use of change rooms, ball cleaning
  • Should competitive community sport be allowed if professional community sport is?  Is that practical considering that its easier to control the environment in professional sport with paid staff etc?

What do you think??? {blue}:idontknow:  Let us know your thoughts.

@dan-gippsport really interesting read.  It will certainly be fascinating to see what the Victorian State Government announces from May 11 and how community sport will react.  I suspect it will be different across different sports/clubs/associations.

Open and creative thinking will be required but patience as well.  We want to make sure club volunteers are moving at pace that is ok for them as well.

Looking forward to having a kick again
