After more than 10 years playing in the Football Integration Development Association (FIDA) football league, Gippsland Power All Abilities Football team have broken the drought and have won their maiden premiership.

The Gippsland team has suffered some lean years in recent history, not winning a game and suffering numerous 10 -20 goal defeats in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. In the 2014 season however, the team showed that by sticking together and training hard, great things can happen. Coach Peter Keily is to be applauded for the work he has put in over the years to bring the team right through to premiership glory.

The 2014 season came down to the Grand final match on Sunday 31 August. Gippsland & North Footscray finished 1 & 2 on the ladder of the season proper and were 1 & 1 against each other throughout the season.

In a hotly contested match, the Power flew out of the blocks kicking 2 goals in the opening 5 minutes. The tempo settled and Nth Footscray missed a few opportunities which allowed Gippy to capitalise and take a 4 goal lead into the first break.

The wind started to strengthen in the 2nd quarter giving Nth Footscray the advantage. The Devils closed the gap early to start to put the pressure on the Power. The Gippsland Power regrouped with the midfield of Michael Scholz, Sam Horner, Jaime Brewington and Kalvin Walters kick-starting into action. Some hard running through the lines allowed the Powers’ key forwards, Steven Scholz and Dave Bowen, to capitalise maintaining a 4 goal lead at the main break.

The Power piled on 4 goals to nothing in a dominant third quarter performance to set the match up. The Power’s defence of Paddy Maurice, Matt Keily and Captain Andy Layton withstood huge pressure in the fourth quarter, Nth Footscray came out hard with the wind kicking 4 quick goals to put the match on a knife’s edge. However a steadying goal by Matt Cartwright followed by the match winner by Sam Horner sealed it for Gippsland to take out the FIDA Div 3 Premiership.
