Round 9 of the FIDA football league continued on Sunday 27th July at Casey Fields seeing a top of the table battle between Gippsland and Cranbourne.

The first quarter was a tight contest with both sides contesting fiercely in the early stages.  Cranbourne didn’t make the most of their early opportunities having 6 scoring shots without registering a goal.  In contrast our Gippsland boys, Sam Horner(2) & Steven Scholz (1), got a 100% return with 3 goals from 3 attempts to take an early lead at the quarter time break.

In the second quarter Gippsland’s midfield lineup started to click with Jamie Brewington, Sam Horner, Kevlin Walters and Steven Scholz all getting a lot of the ball and were using it well.  The midfield guys all contributed to the scoreboard along with forward Sam Horner snaring another 2 to take a growing lead into the half time break.

The defensive screws were tightened in the third quarter of the game, however Gippsland were able to once again extend its lead kicking 3 goals to 1.

The game opened up in the last quarter as players tired.  Gippsland were able to increase the pressure on the Cranbourne team and didn’t let them score easily.  The defensive work of Paddy Maurice, Michael Scholz and Matt Cartwright made the difference as Gippsland ran out easy winners.  The result on Sunday pretty much secures top spot for Gippsland leading into the finals with only 1 more round to go.
