Having finished with the minor premiership, top of the ladder Gippsland Power All Abilities football team travelled to Sandown on Sunday 24 August to make its first ever finals appearance in the Football Integration Development Association (FIDA) league semi-finals. Gippsland has played in the league for the past 10 years, and this side in particular have had some lean years, in particular during the 2012 & 2013 seasons whereby they barely won a game. This opportunity was one being relished by the players.
The match was one that lived up to finals hype with both sides attacking the ball hard, some great outside running and exceptional team work on display. At quarter time there was only a few points in it after both sides missed a few opportunities. Gippsland had the better of the second quarter with the midfield of Kelvin Waters, Sam Horner, Michael Scholz & Jaime Brewington starting to get on top. Gippsland held a handy 22 point lead at half time.
Sandown came back hard in the third quarter getting back to within 10 points, but a late goal in the third quarter to full forward Matt Cartwright gave Gippsland a bit of breathing space going into the last quarter. A tense last quarter was battled out, but Gippsland were able to come away with the chocolates with goals to Kelvin Waters & Sam Horner, securing their first ever Grand Final appearance.
FIDA Div 3 Semi Final Scores
The match was played in great spirits which was a testament to the players. Considering that at the start of the 2014 season Sandown & Gippsland almost merged due to lack of playing numbers, a huge congratulations has to be passed on to the volunteers of both sides to a) get teams on the park, & b) competitive sides that made semi & grand finals.
Gippsland will now play North Footscray in the Grand Final on Sunday 31 August. These sides are 1 & 1 this season with Gippsland winning their Round 1 showdown and North Footscray winning the reverse match mid-season. It stands to be a sensational game.
