GippSport Access for All Abilities is pleased to announce a new partnership with SCOPE, developing a MultiSport program for people with high support needs.
Within Gippsland we have identified that there are currently no sustainable sporting opportunities for people with a disability who have high support needs. Scope and GippSport are partnering with Gippsland Leisure Centres to provide FREE Come N Try events to promote three popular modified sports, Balloon Football, Modified Cricket and Boccia. While there will be a focus on people with high support needs this does not exclude others from participating.
The Come N Trys will be held in localities across Baw Baw, Latrobe City, Wellington, East Gippsland and South Gippsland/Bass Coast. The sessions will be 10:30 – 2:30pm in the following locations:
- Wednesday 28 May – Warragul YMCA
- Wednesday 4 June – Latrobe Leisure Morwell
- Wednesday 11 June – Gippsland Regional Sports Complex Sale
- Wednesday 18 June – Bairnsdale Aquatic & Recreation Centre
- Wednesday 25 June – South Gippsland SPLASH YMCA
The aim of the come & try sessions is to generate interest in a sustainable multisport program that will travel the region providing ongoing sports opportunities. We plan to develop Multisport teams in each region that we host a come & try session who will compete in a league format. This League will be managed by a Steering Committee made up of Players and interested Volunteers.
Currently there is a State Balloon Football League and we envisage/hope to have a Gippsland Team eventually competing in that league. Balloon Football is supported by AFL Vic.
There will be a need for volunteers from the community to assist as umpires, coaches and ‘pushers’. We plan to approach secondary schools, sporting clubs and other groups and will provide training in disability awareness as well as game rules. We anticipate that some of these roles could be filled by people with mild disabilities as well.
The outcomes from this project will be an informed understanding of what sporting opportunities people with disabilities with high support needs would like to participate in, have a sustainable regional approach to developing these sporting opportunities and to ensure that people with disabilities who have high support needs have the opportunity to access ongoing sports opportunities in their local area.
