Wow, what a busy 2 weeks we’ve had in Gippsland!!!

Social Inclusion Week & International Day of People with disability provide us with an opportunity to celebrate best practice and embrace diversity amongst our community, and for GippSport, specifically within Gippsland’s community sport sector.  Our AAA staff have been all over Gippsland helping clubs and community groups celebrate the contribution people with disability and people from other backgrounds make to our sports clubs.  Following is a quick summary of the events that took place.

Special Olympics Community Sports Link Program Gala Day

Latrobe Special Development School & Sale Specialist School have both participated in an 8 week tennis program in partnership with Special Olympics Gippsland and the Traralgon & Sale Tennis Clubs.  Throughout the duration of the program 25 students from the 2 schools learnt the basic tennis skills and participated in their weekly program.  The program culminated in a gala day where the two schools came together at Traralgon and had a great day full of fun & games. Thanks to the Traralgon & Sale Tennis Clubs for your great work during this program.

Big Issue Street Soccer Demonstration Game

For the third year in a row, the Morwell Big Issue Street Soccer program hosted a demonstration game in Morwell with a number of local businesses and community groups in attendance.  A fantastic BBQ lunch was provided and the mini challenge matches was definitely a highlight.

South Coast Access Alliance Meeniyan Family Fun Day

The South Coast Access Alliance have been getting a reputation for running fantastic community events after the previous two years beach festivals in Inverloch & Cowes.  With a slightly different focus this year the SCAA hosted a family fun day in Meeniyan for families of children with autism. The day was a huge success with well over 150 attendees.  The SCAA are very appreciative of the effort put in by the young adults who attend Yooralla First Base in Leongatha & Connecting Skills Australia Wonthaggi for hosting the day presenting the activities as well as cooking the amazing food.  We cant wait to see what the SCAA organise for 2014.
