GippSport in partnership with SCOPE Victoria have developed a new MultiSport program for people with high support needs and will be rolling it out across the Gippsland region.  On Wednesday May 28, the team ran the first of five Gippsland come & try sessions at Warragul YMCA Leisure Centre.

Over 70 participants attended the day from Mawarra, SCOPE & Warragul Specialist School and participated in 3 sports – Balloon Football, Boccia & Modified Cricket.  All sports have been adapted to enable people of all abilities to enjoy playing fun, social and competitive sports.  Balloon Football follows Australian Rules football and uses a large inflated balloon. Modified Cricket is played using a mechanical bat and a bowling mechanism operated by a single switch, which enables people of all abilities to participate with ease. To get involved in Boccia, players can throw, kick or use a ramp to direct the ball towards a jack in a highly strategic target game.

Volunteers from Warragul Regional College, AFL Gippsland and Boccia Victoria assisted in making the day a huge success.  An added bonus on the day was the attendance by 2014 Australian Boccia champion – Gavin.  He provided a demonstration Boccia match showing how the sport is played at the highest level.

The MultiSport roadshow now heads off down the highway with sessions in the coming weeks at Morwell, Sale, Bairnsdale & Leongatha.  To participate in these days please contact Shirley Higman from SCOPE on 0488 254 747.

GippSport Access for All Abilities Program Manager, Dan Poynton hopes that, “once the series of come & try sessions are complete, we are wanting to set up an ongoing league arrangement between towns.  We would love to speak with interested people who might want to assist with volunteering on a steering committee and with running the days.”
