Empowering All-Abilities Junior Football in Warragul

In Term 2, GippSport was approached by a community member from Baw Baw Shire with a vision to pilot an All-Abilities Junior Football Program in Warragul. The motivation behind this initiative stemmed from the recognition that mainstream programs often did not cater completely to the needs of participants with disabilities. Given GippSport’s extensive experience in developing and running inclusive start-up programs, we were the perfect partner to bring this vision to life.

Program Development

The idea for the program originated from a conversation between the community member and GippSport. This conversation enabled us to grasp the community’s specific needs and enthusiasm. While there were existing sporting opportunities, we identified a lack of physical activity options tailored for individuals with disabilities. With the collaborative support of the GippSport Place-Based Team and the Baw Baw Shire, we designed a program that truly catered to the participants’ needs.

Program Implementation

With support from the GippSport Place-Based Team, we tailored the program to be as inclusive and accessible as possible. Key modifications included:

Extended Learning Time:

Participants were given extra time to learn skills, ensuring they were not left behind.

Smaller Group Sizes:

This allowed for more direct coaching and personalised attention.

Indoor Sessions:

Trialing an indoor setting helped remove barriers for participants whose physical disabilities might hinder outdoor participation.

Creating a Supportive Environment

Our program offered a welcoming space where participants’ skills, abilities, and disabilities were considered. Parents and participants appreciated the weekly reminders, which kept them engaged and informed. This proactive communication set our program apart from others, ensuring participants felt valued and supported.

By taking into account each participant’s specific needs, we tailored the program to maximize comfort and enjoyment. For instance, we worked closely with parents to find solutions that allowed participants with physical disabilities to feel comfortable and included.

Observing Positive Changes

At the start of the program, participants displayed varying levels of engagement. Some were extroverted and quickly involved, while others were more reserved. Over time, we observed significant positive changes. Participants who were initially less verbal became more communicative, demonstrating the program’s success in building trust and rapport between coaches and participants.

One heartwarming example of this positive change was a participant who, towards the end of the program, felt confident enough to offer snacks to everyone during breaks. This small gesture demonstrated the strong bonds and friendships formed throughout the program.

Indoor Sessions and Future Plans

Following the success of the pilot program in an outdoor setting, we recognised the need for an indoor option. A trial indoor session was conducted, which proved to be a successful and viable alternative. This setting not only ensured the program could continue regardless of weather conditions but also made it more accessible to participants with substantial disabilities or those in wheelchairs.

As a result of the pilot’s success, GippSport has launched an additional 6-week Junior Football Program, now transitioned to an indoor venue. This change ensures a safer and more inclusive environment, encouraging more participants with various disabilities to join and experience the joy of physical activity.
