About Orange Round
Orange Round is a Gippsland-wide initiative encouraging sports clubs to help raise awareness about the impact of sexual assault, family violence and violence against women and girls in our community, and to build a club culture that promotes equality and respect.
The concept grew out of the United Nations' International Orange Day, held on the 25th of every month to raise awareness of violence against women and girls.
Clubs and codes across Gippsland have hosted Orange Round since 2015, with orange goalpost covers showing a club's commitment to respect and players wearing orange armbands as a sign of solidarity.
Sporting clubs are in a powerful position to shift attitudes. In Australia, one in four women have experienced violence from an intimate partner, which means there's likely to be people in every club who've been affected, directly or indirectly.
How your club can get involved
Every club's Orange Round looks a little different, but at a minimum we ask clubs to:
- have players wear orange armbands for the game
- put up signage around the club to raise awareness
Beyond that, clubs often add:
- orange goalpost or netball post covers
- orange socks, ribbons or club uniform touches
- orange decorations around the clubrooms
- social media posts to spread the word beyond game day
GippSport also offers gender audits and in-club education sessions for clubs who want to take the work further and make it stick beyond the round itself.
