Gippsland Sport Census Report

As the Covid-19 pandemic started in early 2020, across the following two years a thirst for data to ‘understand the impact’ has emerged. Many reports have been written about the impact of the pandemic on community sport broadly, all with common themes emerging.

GippSport set out to find out specifically what was happening in Gippsland. There had been lots of broad high level reports published, we were interested in trying to identify specifically what is happening at a grass roots level. How are Gippsland clubs weathering the storm and what are the local opportunities as we return to sport in Gippsland?

The report and discussion

This research aims to build a comprehensive understanding of the scale and nature of the challenges all Gippsland sport and recreation clubs are currently facing, and is a piece of work that we intend to build on over time.

Throughout 2021, GippSport contributed to the Regional Sport Victoria (RSV) Supporting Regional Clubs research project. The intent of which was to inform the future focus areas of RSAs as well as assist the sector in developing practical supports that address challenges for community sport. This report has been finalised and is available through RSV.

In October 2021, GippSport opened two surveys to collect detailed information and understand the current landscape of grassroots sporting clubs across Gippsland, our first Gippsland Sports Census. This was a further deep dive using the RSV report as the starting platform.
