Girls Kicking Goals at Nyora

In 2024, Nyora Football Club made history by fielding its first-ever under-14 girls team — a moment that not only marked a new chapter for the club but also shone a light on the growing power of girls’ participation in AFL across Gippsland. What started as a dream between a few friends quickly turned into something much bigger. When past player Adam Tagliaferro’s daughter and her mates said they wanted to play footy together, the club rallied behind them. Within weeks, Nyora was ready to launch its first all-girls side. “Nyora is special because of the people involved,” says coach Adam. “When the girls wanted a team, the committee jumped straight in. Everyone just wanted to make it happen.”

from six to nineteen

The season began with just six registered players. By round one, there were nerves about whether the team could get off the ground. But word spread quickly. One young girl, watching her brother at training, asked to join in despite not having boots — she ran out barefoot, and loved every minute. Moments like that captured the spirit of the team. Week by week, more girls put their hands up, and by season’s end, Nyora had a squad of 19. “The girls just loved being around each other,” reflects Adam. “They embraced our team values and created such a welcoming environment. That’s why so many others wanted to join.”

changing club culture

The girls weren’t just players on the field — they changed the way the whole club felt. Their enthusiasm and team-first approach inspired others, and the community quickly got behind them. Friday night meals at the clubrooms became extra special, with families sticking around to watch the girls play and celebrate match awards together afterwards. “The community has really embraced them,” says the president, Shannon Gallagher. “They’ve brought a fresh energy and strengthened the connection between the club and locals.” Even the mixed under-14 boys team pitched in, joining training sessions and helping the girls develop their skills. It showed just how much the whole club wanted the girls to succeed.

the play well difference

Behind the scenes, the Play Well campaign was crucial in shaping the team’s success. Through workshops, resources, and direct support, Play Well helped educate the club on how to create welcoming environments for girls, guided coaches on common barriers to female participation, and provided practical assistance to get the program off the ground. This foundation gave Nyora the confidence and tools to ensure the girls’ experience was positive from day one.

GippSport, AFL Gippsland, and small grants for uniforms and equipment through the South Gippsland Shire Community grants scheme also played their part, keeping the program accessible. But the real success came from the girls themselves — their determination, teamwork and passion set the tone. For Nyora, the girls’ team has become a point of pride. “Our goal is simple,” says Adam. “We want girls to have a place where they feel supported, can play the game they love, and be part of something special.”

a bright future for women and girls in footy

Off the back of such a strong first season, Nyora will expand in 2025 with under-12 and under-16 girls’ teams. The dream now is to create a clear pathway for girls in the region, from Auskick through to senior footy. The president Shannon’s advice for other clubs considering a girls’ program is simple: “Just have a crack.” From six players at the start of the year to three teams planned for next season, Nyora has shown what’s possible when girls are given the chance to play footy. Their first season wasn’t just about starting a team — it was about proving that girls belong in the game and celebrating the joy they bring to it.
