Building a Permanent All Abilities Netball Pathway in Bairnsdale

The Bairnsdale Netball Association, based at the WORLD Centre, identified a significant gap for people living with disabilities in the local sporting community. While short-term clinics and one-off programs were available, there was no consistent, weekly opportunity for participants to develop skills and experience structured competition.

In February 2026, the Association partnered with GippSport and experienced netball coach Janet Parker to launch a weekly All Abilities Netball program. Designed to move beyond the traditional clinic model, the program provides a safe, inclusive environment where participants can build skills, connect socially, and transition into regular match play.

This work is important because it creates a consistent and meaningful sporting experience, giving athletes with disabilities the same opportunity to participate, compete, and belong as any other netballer in East Gippsland.

The Challenge: Moving Beyond Short-Term Programs

Prior to GippSport’s involvement, opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport in Bairnsdale were limited and fragmented. Most programs were delivered as short-term “come and try” sessions or brief skill-based clinics.

While valuable as an introduction, these formats did not provide the consistency needed to build confidence, relationships, or a genuine sense of belonging within a club environment. Participants often remained in a cycle of introductory sessions, without progressing to game-based play or experiencing the structure of a regular competition.

The Association recognised that without a long-term, consistent program, participants were missing out on the social connection and development that comes with regular sport. There was also a risk that players would continue to be excluded from the full “game day” experience that is central to regional sport culture.

To address this, a shift was needed from short-term delivery to a sustainable, ongoing program that could be embedded within the Association’s weekly competition structure.

The Approach: Building a Sustainable Program On and Off the Court

GippSport worked closely with the Bairnsdale Netball Association to establish a program that was both inclusive and sustainable from the outset. Rather than providing one-off support, GippSport took a hands-on approach by attending weekly sessions at the WORLD Centre, working alongside Janet Parker to deliver coaching and support participants in real time.

This on-the-ground involvement ensured participants received tailored coaching, while also building the confidence and capability of the Association to deliver inclusive programs independently over time.

In addition to delivery, GippSport focused on the behind-the-scenes work required to sustain the program. This included promoting the program through regional networks, connecting the Association with local disability service providers, and supporting grant applications to secure funding for court hire and equipment.

By combining practical coaching support with strategic planning and funding assistance, GippSport helped embed the program as a regular fixture within the Association’s Term 1 and Term 2 schedule, rather than a short-term initiative.

The Impact: From Clinics to Competition

Since launching in February 2026, the program has created a significant shift in how participants engage with netball. More than a one-off experience, players are now part of a consistent weekly program, attending sessions every Thursday and participating in structured match play.

This consistency has helped build confidence among participants, while also establishing a regular social routine for players and their families. Participants are no longer positioned as beginners attending clinics, but as active players developing skills, understanding the game, and taking part in competition.

The introduction of match play has been a key milestone. Players have progressed from basic skill development to learning court positions, game flow, and teamwork, providing a more complete and meaningful sporting experience.

The program has also influenced coaching practices within the Association. Coaches are now more confident in adapting drills and sessions to suit a range of abilities, creating a more inclusive environment across the club.

Importantly, this initiative has shifted the perception of what All Abilities sport can look like. Rather than short-term engagement, the program demonstrates that with the right support, inclusive sport can be embedded as an ongoing and valued part of a club’s weekly operations.

What We Learned

This project reinforced that participants with disabilities are seeking the same opportunities as any other athlete, not just skill development, but competition, connection, and consistency.

Providing a full-term program, rather than short blocks, led to higher engagement, stronger relationships, and greater confidence among participants. It also highlighted the importance of visible, on-the-ground support, with GippSport’s presence playing a key role in building the Association’s confidence to deliver and sustain the program.

What’s Next

The focus for the remainder of 2026 is to establish the All Abilities program as a permanent fixture within the Bairnsdale netball calendar. With strong foundations now in place, the next step is to further develop the program into a structured competition pathway, with potential to connect into regional opportunities in the future.

This model provides a clear example for other clubs across Gippsland, demonstrating that with the right combination of coaching, planning, and support, it is possible to move beyond short-term programs and create lasting, inclusive participation opportunities.
