ABC Takeover Youth Summit, Recreation Revolution

In September 2024, GippSport proudly joined the ABC Takeover Youth Summit in the Latrobe Valley, a unique program giving young people the chance to voice their experiences, design community projects, and influence regional change. The summit brought together 35 young people alongside six ambassador organisations, including GippSport, to co-design initiatives that reflect youth perspectives on belonging, recreation, and wellbeing.

From Conversation to Creation

During the summit, the group GippSport mentored was challenged to explore one powerful question:

“How might we change the perception of non-traditional sport?”

This question grew from heartfelt discussions where young people shared frustrations about limited local options for fun, affordable activities that weren’t mainstream. Many spoke about feeling left out because their preferred ways to move, like dancing, dodgeball, or musical theatre, weren’t considered “real sport.”

“I’d rather do musical theatre where I can express myself, but people say it’s not a real way to be active.”

Through brainstorming sessions supported by GippSport Program Officer Emma Foley, the team developed a bold response: Recreation Revolution (Rec-Rev), a youth-led expo celebrating creativity, movement, and expression in all its forms. Rec-Rev’s mission is simple but transformative: to show that being active can look different for everyone.

Designing Rec-Rev

Rec-Rev was co-designed by five young leaders over four months, culminating in the delivery of a non-traditional sports session at the Latrobe Expo in February 2025, which engaged 197 children and young people. The session included interactive activities that encouraged participation without the pressure of competition, from roller derby demonstrations to creative movement games.

The project gave participants real ownership, as they led planning, promotion, and delivery, with GippSport providing mentoring, logistical support, and connections to local networks. This approach empowered the team to showcase that sport can be inclusive, expressive, and fun.

Empowering Youth Voices

Throughout the summit and beyond, the young people involved gained confidence and leadership skills. At the Youth Ideas Launch, they presented their project to local leaders, organisations, and politicians, receiving not only enthusiastic feedback but also an $8,000 FRRR grant to bring Rec-Rev to life.

“It was empowering to be part of something where everyone’s ideas mattered. We felt like we were being heard and could actually make a difference.”

Lasting Impact

Rec-Rev showed what’s possible when young people are given the space and support to lead their own ideas. The project has helped build confidence, teamwork, and a sense of pride among those involved, while sparking broader conversations about what sport and recreation can look like.

For GippSport, it reinforced the importance of listening to young voices and creating opportunities that reflect their interests, creativity, and energy. Rec-Rev is a great example of how collaboration and youth-led design can make participation more welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
