Empowering Inclusivity: Implementing Cheerleading at Bass Coast Specialist School

GippSport and the Bass Coast Specialist School have been working together for many years aiming to enhance students’ experiences through various sports and recreational activities.

In 2024 Bass Coast Specialist School contacted GippSport, seeking to introduce a range of new and fresh sports and recreational activities for their physical education program. Riding the wave of inspiration from VicSport’s Doing Sport Differently forum, numerous sports were discussed, however, GippSport Program Officer Emma suggested cheerleading.

Fueled by enthusiastic support from both GippSport and Bass Coast Specialist School the decision was made to trail cheerleading, introducing something fresh and exciting to students.

The Story of BCSS Chearleading

We understand the challenges of getting young people to engage is physical activity, especially organised physical activity, and when meeting with Gemma from the Bass Coast Specialist School we brainstormed ideas on how we could not only engage the students but also foster a love for physical activity and movement. It was decided the senior school would continue their journey into the world of Pickleball and middle school students would have the chance to give cheerleading a go.

Cheerleading is more than what you see in the movies, it is a sport for everyone. Cheerleading involves fundamental motor skills, rhythm and encompasses elements from both gymnastics and dance and has a unique way of bringing people together making it the perfect sport for Bass Coast Specialist School students.

Cheerleading is a sport that GippSport had not previously had the chance to offer but with the passion of Emma from the place-based team and the encouragement of Gemma from the Bass Coast Specialist School, we believed GippSport could drive this exciting new experience.

How this program worked

Recognizing the importance of creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment, GippSport crafted a program that emphasized fun, teamwork, and skill development. Weekly sessions were designed to be dynamic and engaging, incorporating elements such as dynamic warm-ups, skill-building exercises, choreography sessions, and interactive games. Through careful planning and execution, the program aimed to empower students to explore their abilities, build confidence, and develop essential motor skills in a safe and inclusive space.

Over the course of six weeks, students at Bass Coast Specialist School enthusiastically embraced the world of cheerleading, shaking their pom-poms and mastering intricate routines. The program culminated in a two-and-a-half-minute performance showcasing the students’ newfound skills in jumping, spinning, and synchronized movement. Importantly, every student in the class participated wholeheartedly, reflecting the program’s success in breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of belonging for all.
