From Participant to Leader: Tarkyn’s StreetGames Journey

A standout success of the StreetGames program has been the personal and professional growth of Tarkyn, a former Year 12 student from Korumburra Secondary College.

What began as casual participation quickly grew into something more, Tarkyn showed genuine enthusiasm for contributing to program delivery, volunteering regularly during his school lunch breaks. Through mentoring, guidance, and hands-on training from GippSport, he built valuable leadership and facilitation skills, along with newfound confidence.

This experience not only strengthened his sense of responsibility and community connection but also opened doors for his future. With GippSport’s support, Tarkyn successfully transitioned into a paid facilitator role, now leading the very program he once joined as a participant.

Tarkyn’s story highlights the strength of StreetGames in creating supported pathways for young people, from participants to emerging leaders in their own communities.

“Being able to run Street Games at my old school has been a great experience and has given me an opportunity to encourage, not just my old peers, but other students at the school to participate in a fun time. It’s helped me learn and grow and improve my skills to adapt to different situations.”
