Gippy Girls Can Month is back this September, and it's a whole month this time

A full month of ways for women and girls across Gippsland to get active, connect and belong

Gippy Girls Can Month is returning in September 2026, and for the first time, it's running as a full month of activity rather than a single week. Led by GippSport, and supported by the Gippsland Region Public Health Unit (GRPHU) with a focus on the wellbeing benefits of getting active and creating welcoming, supportive spaces, the campaign is about giving women and girls across all six Gippsland local government areas a genuine chance to get active in ways that suit them.

For a lot of women, the biggest barrier isn't fitness. It's walking into a club or a session and not knowing anyone, worrying about being judged, or feeling like everyone else already knows what they're doing. Gippy Girls Can Month exists to take that pressure off.

Come as you are. Move how you like.

Not a fitness campaign

Gippy Girls Can Month isn't about how fit you are, how long you've been active or what you look like. It's about belonging. It's a Gippsland-wide campaign helping women and girls get active in ways that feel welcoming, social and pressure-free, whatever their age, background or fitness level, and whether they've done it before or never in their life.

Five things it's built on

Confidence

Feeling comfortable and welcome to give something a go, whatever your starting point.

Connection

Meeting new people, getting active together and feeling part of your community.

Community

Local clubs and groups across Gippsland opening their doors and making women feel at home.

Inclusion

Every age, background, shape and ability level, getting active together without fear of judgement.

Wellbeing

Moving in a way that feels good, and finding joy in being active, whatever that looks like.

What's on across the region

Activities are live now on the Gippy Girls Can website, with a full spread on offer across all six Gippsland LGAs, and there's more than just sport on the list. Here's a taste of what's on:

  • Come and try rowing, Sale Rowing Club
  • Roller derby come and try, Churchill
  • Women and girls walking hockey, Drouin
  • Chair yoga and gentle movement, Grantville and Inverloch
  • Table tennis, Sale
  • Bowling with babies, Traralgon
  • Mums and daughters doubles day, Longford
  • Parents walking group, Sale
  • Come and try cricket for women and girls, various locations
  • Wellness at the Wetlands, a guided forest bathing walk in Heyfield
  • Pilates: move and connect, Sale
  • Living strong for 60+, Mirboo North

Every one of these has come from a local club, council or community group putting their hand up to host something this September. GippSport coordinates it all, connecting the dots across six LGAs so women can find something close to home, whether that's a first-timer's come and try session or a regular walking group.

What is Gippy Girls Can

Gippy Girls Can is a Gippsland-wide movement encouraging women and girls to get active in ways that suit them, no judgement, no pressure, just real opportunities to move. It brings together local activities and programs, organised by local councils, sporting organisations and community groups, with a social media community where women and girls celebrate getting active together.

Gippy Girls Can was established in 2018 by GippSport, with support from VicHealth, as part of the Latrobe Health Innovation Zone initiative. From 2018 to 2024, it also aligned with This Girl Can Victoria, VicHealth's state-wide campaign that worked to break down the barriers stopping women from being active, such as fear of judgement or feeling they weren't fit enough to start. That campaign has since come to an end, but Gippy Girls Can remains ongoing, reflecting the continued need for safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces for women and girls across Gippsland to be active.

Gippy Girls Can is delivered by GippSport in partnership with the Gippsland Region Public Health Unit (GRPHU), and with local councils, sporting organisations and community groups right across the region. Women and girls can also share what would help them get active any time of year through the ongoing community survey.
