Breaking Barriers: Wildcats Basketball Group Hosts Inclusive Tournament on International Day of People with Disability

Sport is a game-changer, and the Wildcats Basketball Group is proving just that. This year, they are breaking barriers in basketball by creating space for athletes of all abilities. On Sunday, 3rd December, the Wildcats will host an inclusive basketball tournament at the Gippsland Regional Sporting Centre in Sale, celebrating the International Day of People with Disability. The event promises to be a celebration of ability, resilience, and community spirit.

Building on Success

In September, the Wildcats held their first all-abilities basketball event, a groundbreaking addition to their traditional Masters tournament. Partnering with the George Gray Centre and local service providers, the Wildcats launched an all-abilities division, providing a platform for players to showcase their skills, connect with others, and, most importantly, feel included.

Steve Saynor, one of the key figures behind this initiative, described the inspiring moment that sparked the Wildcats’ commitment to inclusivity.

“During our Masters tournament, I walked into the stadium and saw 55 to 60 all-abilities players having the time of their lives. It hit me—these players deserve to be part of bigger events, not sidelined. Basketball has room for everyone, and we’re here to prove it.”

A Moment to Remember

The September tournament was more than just a game—it was a celebration of true inclusion. Players took home medals and proudly wore their first-ever team uniforms. Peter Green, CEO of the George Gray Centre, reflected on the significance of the event:

“Some players had never experienced being part of a formal team before. True inclusion isn’t just about being on the court; it’s about belonging to a team and competing within your abilities.”

The impact extended beyond the court. Diane Chandler, a passionate supporter of the Wildcats’ inclusive efforts, reflected on the profound impact the all-abilities athletes had on the audience.

“The Masters players came over to watch—they sat, they cheered, and many were moved to tears. They saw participants with the same heart, passion, and determination as anyone else. It was a truly emotional and inspiring moment.”

December Tournament: Bigger and Better

On 3rd December, the Wildcats aim to build on this momentum with an even larger event. Saynor is reaching out to schools, community groups, and retirement villages to fill the stands with a supportive crowd.

“Our goal is to create an electric atmosphere for the players. A cheer squad, no matter how small, can make all the difference,” Saynor explained.

The event promises not only to be a day of exciting basketball but also a powerful reminder of how sport can bridge gaps in the community.

These tournaments help people connect, often for the first time, with someone with a disability,” said Peter Green. “That’s where real change begins.”

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Saynor envisions a network of inclusive tournaments across Victoria.

“Imagine half a dozen events a year where players travel, compete, and create new experiences. That’s where we’re headed. If we can make that happen, we’ve done our job.”
