Sun Protection Tips for Sport

As the weather warms up, it’s a great time to remind players, coaches, and families to stay SunSmart while enjoying sport.

UV radiation can’t be seen or felt and can still be harmful on cool or cloudy days. When the UV Index reaches 3 or above, it’s time to protect your skin.

Top sun protection tips for sun sports

  • Know when to use sun protection. Protect your skin whenever UV levels reach 3 or above.
  • Check UV levels easily. Download the free SunSmart Global UV app or add the SunSmart widget to your club’s website. UV widget – SunSmart
  • Implement a Sun Protection Policy. Clubs and associations have a duty of care to provide safe environments, including UV protection.
  • Provide shade. Adjust schedules to avoid peak UV hours and ensure shaded areas are available.
  • Supply sunscreen. Keep sunscreen handy at venues for training and competition.
  • Share the SunSmart message. Include reminders in club newsletters, social media posts, and event materials.
  • Role model SunSmart behaviour. Encourage coaches, officials, and senior players to lead by example: wear wide-brimmed hats, apply sunscreen regularly, and seek shade.
