AFL 9s is starting in Bairnsdale

AFL 9s is starting in Bairnsdale with a five week competition commencing on Monday 13 November at the Bairnsdale City Oval. AFL 9s is the Australian Football Leagues official social version of the game and is suitable for both males and females. It’s a fast, fun, free-flowing game that involves 9 players on each team playing on a smaller field. Best of all, it’s ‘touch football’ with no tackling or bumping, making it suitable for everyone.

GippSport program coordinator Jaquie Nethercote says that it is a great opportunity for people who are new to the sport, as well as for those looking for a chance to keep their skills during the ‘off-season’. “The social sport concept is aimed to get people who are inactive or somewhat active involved in physical activity. With modifications to the game of AFL, it gives everybody the chance to participate in a fun and social environment. We encourage sporting clubs to get their teams together, as well as people who may be interested in having a go that may not have the capacity to play during the AFL season” Ms Nethercote said.

AFL Victoria’s Football Development Manager Adrian Bromage is excited about the expansion of AFL options in East Gippsland. “The AFL 9’s concept is used extensively through-out the school network and it is enjoyed by all that participate. The adaptation of the game rules make it very user friendly and interactive for all. The exciting thing about this competition will be the mix of people able to play from Children as young as 12, females, males, beginners and the experienced veteran’s who might like to pull on the boot’s again!”

Cost per team is $360 and there is still time to register to participate. To register visit www.afl9s.com.au and search for “Bairnsdale or 3875”.
