Celebrating Inclusivity: An International Women’s Day 2024 Special Q&A with Maffra Cricket Club’s Visionary Leaders

On this International Women’s Day 2024, we’re shining the spotlight on Maffra Cricket Club’s decision to introduce a women’s senior cricket team in the 2023/2024 season. This is more than a sporting achievement—it’s a cultural shift, a community triumph, and a step towards genuine inclusivity in sports. We chatted with Mel, a vital figure in the club, to discuss this exciting development.

Q: Mel, can you tell us about the origin of the women’s cricket team at Maffra Cricket Club?

Absolutely! The inception was truly community driven. Cindy, one of our dedicated committee members, was instrumental in this. Instead of traditional recruitment methods, we reached out, we talked, we listened, and we invited the community to express their interest. It was a collaborative effort from the get-go, and it’s been amazing to see the success that came from that.

Q: The response from the community seems to have been overwhelming. How did the club manage to garner such interest?

We’ve been a little bit blown away by the response. From our initial promotions to the end of the season, women kept showing up, eager to play. They weren’t just there for the games; they were an active part of our trainings and club life. We tapped into the existing community around us, reaching out to family members who had been involved with the club and frequently came to watch, alongside using social media to spark conversations.

Q: What measures did the club take to ensure inclusivity and support for potential players?

We recognised early on that every player might face different barriers. Our approach was to create a supportive environment where players could participate in any capacity they could manage. There were no penalties for missing or shortening training sessions, and we provided a shared kit bag so everyone had access to the gear they needed. The entire club worked together with their team members to ensure fair access to facilities and training times.

Q: How has the introduction of the women’s team brought about positive change within the club?

Our senior men’s coaches, who now train the women’s team on occasion, have been refreshed by the enthusiasm. We’ve also worked hard to ensure that the language we use is inclusive, with both women’s and men’s teams being referred to as Senior Teams. The support from the committee has been unwavering, and the club has benefited immensely from the increased membership and the community feel.

Q: On this International Women’s Day, how do you see the club’s efforts aligning with the ethos of ‘Count her In’?

We’re committed to not just welcoming women into our club but integrating them into every aspect. It’s about making sure that women are counted in every decision, every game, and every event. This aligns with the spirit of International Women’s Day.

Q: Looking to the future, what are the club’s plans for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the women’s team?

We’re continuously reviewing what’s working well and identifying areas for improvement. We’re also planning to launch a ‘Social Sixes’ program to introduce beginners to the sport, building their confidence and helping them enjoy the friendship of the club.

Maffra Cricket Club’s success in recruitment goes beyond the cricket field; it’s about fostering a sense of belonging and community. Their forward-thinking strategy ensures that on this pitch, every woman feels empowered to say, “Count me in!”
