Gippsland Sport Census

The last year has been incredibly tough for sporting clubs, officials, and volunteers.

At GippSport, we want to understand the current landscape of grassroots sporting clubs across Gippsland. That is why we are undertaking a research project that will enable us to gain insight into exactly what supports the Gippsland sport recreation community needs to get back on its feet.

By gaining an accurate picture of what has happened with clubs, members, volunteers, and officials, GippSport will support traditional sports club’s more accurately by shaping services and support to meet the community’s needs.

What is the survey?

The surveys have been developed to produce an accurate, robust sector-wide understanding of the challenges in sport and recreation, with restrictions remaining in place and when sport and recreation return in the future.

At GippSport, we’re conducting two surveys to have in-depth and detailed data about Gippsland clubs. This information will give us an understanding of the effects Covid-19 restrictions has had on our sporting community by providing us information on participation data, identify Gippsland participation trends, and a snapshot of the behind-the-scenes running of our sporting clubs.

The first survey is a membership/participation survey. This survey will give us an understanding of your clubs members by breaking down the total numbers of participants in each age group into gender and gathering information on how many players have a disability or are indigenous. This survey will also identify the participation trends indicating whether there has been an increase, decrease or if there has been no change to participation within the last five years. It will also identify which age groups are most successful and hardest hit in retaining and attracting and how the structure of the competition has impacted the club’s membership. This information will inform GippSport on what kind of support we can provide our Gippsland sporting clubs.

The second survey looks at the non-playing roles gathering information on gender, accredited, paid and unpaid for the committee, coaches, officials, and volunteers. The survey will also identify how often the club committee meets, any subcommittees, and how often the club operates per year. This survey will give us a snapshot of the operations of their committee, gaining information on volunteer roles, how the club recognises their workforce and the roles they are struggling to fill. The information provided will assist GippSport in providing the appropriate opportunities to upskill its members.

Why is it useful for you to respond to the survey?

GippSport’s research aims to build a comprehensive understanding of the scale and nature of the challenges all Gippsland sport and recreation clubs are facing. It is therefore important to have responses from those involved in delivering and supporting sport and recreation across Gippsland.

This requires achieving sufficient responses from a wide variety of sporting clubs.

How will the information be shared?

Findings should be available in early February 2022. A report will be emailed to members and available on the GippSport website to be used as local advocacy to support the sector.

When is the deadline to complete the survey?

The deadline to complete the survey is midnight on Sunday 28th November.
