No Smoking No Vaping signage for Sporting Clubs

Gippsland Region Public Health Unit (GRPHU) has partnered with local councils and GippSport to promote a healthier community by updating existing ‘No Smoking’ signage to ‘No Smoking or Vaping’. The initiative aims to create a healthier environment for sporting clubs across the region.

According to amendments made to the Tobacco Act 1987, vaping is prohibited in any area where smoking is already banned. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that both tobacco products and e-cigarettes pose significant risks to health, and the safest approach is to avoid using them altogether.

E-cigarette emissions typically contain nicotine and other toxic substances that can harm both users and non-users who are exposed to the aerosols second-hand. Some e-cigarettes that claim to be nicotine-free have been found to contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Studies have shown that never-smoker minors who use e-cigarettes with nicotine have a higher chance of starting to smoke tobacco cigarettes later in life.

Although no local data is available, it is known that e-cigarette use is higher in younger Australians, with 4.8% of the population aged 18-24 using e-cigarettes, compared to 2.2% of the general population aged 18 and over. To encourage healthier habits and create a safer environment, the GRPHU has purchased 650 signs, which are available for free to all sporting clubs across the region. The initiative aims to increase awareness of the harmful effects of smoking and vaping and to promote a healthier lifestyle for all community members.
