Recognising the alarming rise in road accidents among young drivers, Bairnsdale Football Netball Club, in collaboration with GippSport, spearheaded a powerful Road Safety Information Session aimed at uniting the community to combat this growing concern. This initiative aimed to bring the community together to tackle the dangers faced by young drivers.
The session featured Magistrate Mr. Tim Walsh, who passionately spoke about the privilege and responsibility that comes with holding a driver’s license, stressing that this privilege should never be taken for granted. Police Officers Brooke Soulsby and Ange Lando shared harrowing real-world experiences, providing a stark reminder of the tragic outcomes that reckless driving can lead to. A key quote that resonated with everyone was,
"It won't happen to me,"
highlighting the dangerous complacency that many drivers have.
The emotional highlight of the session came when Robyn Dunkley and the Wellman family shared their heartbreaking stories. Robyn’s account of losing her brother 25 years ago, alongside Chelsea and Steven Wellman’s recent loss of their son and brother, Koby, brought the devastating impact of road accidents into sharp focus.
Good Sports played a crucial role by demonstrating how fostering a positive club culture can act as a shield against risky behaviours. By promoting a culture of accountability and care, they underscored the importance of creating environments where safety is prioritised, not just on the field, but on the roads as well.
GippSport urges all community members to continue the conversation about road safety. Together, we can create safer roads and stronger communities. Join us in our ongoing efforts to make Gippsland a safer place for everyone.
